![]() I still have to use the power button to turn off the display (something you can avoid with a cover, of course), though, so I can't escape it entirely. Same goes with the - way too closely-placed, by the way - volume rocker. Vague, squishy, and overly recessed into the frame. I've taken to double-tapping to power on the Nexus 9, a handy feature indeed, as the power button is among the most atrocious I've used in recent memory. I can sometimes hear the wrapping around the battery kind of "stick" against the rear cover when using the device with one hand, something I am decidedly unable to un-hear. If I pick it up by the left side, I can feel the plastic flexing along the edge of the aluminum frame, and occasionally it will produce an audible "click" while using the tablet, something I initially chalked up to a strange touch feedback glitch. ![]() The textured, matte-black plastic is reassuring in grip, if not inspiring of quality. When I pick up my Nexus 9, I feel like I'm grabbing a giant Nexus 5. They're still the gold standard for mass-produced quality in this business. Reaching to the top of the device to power it on has always seemed a bit silly on something so large, and the combination of the home button and Touch ID makes it easy to secure my tablet without creating an annoying PIN or password.Īll in all, no one who picks up an Air 2 is going to go "well, this thing is kind of shoddy" - Apple's level of attention to detail in construction, particularly in consistency, is in my opinion unmatched in the smartphone and tablet industry. Personally, I use a Smart Case, because Apple's Space Gray finish is fairly prone to scratching if you're not careful with it.Ī tablet is one place, I would argue, where a home button is still at home. Apple's anodized aluminum finish isn't for everyone, though - the metal is cold and slick after long periods without handling, perhaps explaining some of the Smart Cover's great popularity. Its very light weight for its size makes it easy to one-hand when reading an eBook or a long article on the web. The iPad itself feels solid and tightly packed, but is very well balanced. ![]() The new Touch ID home button has a similarly strong but refined action. There is never a question of "did I hit the power button?" when using an iPad. The power and volume buttons have a satisfying and long - but easy - travel, and click with authority when pressed. The back of the tablet has very softly rounded corners, too, making the Air 2 comfortable to hold at almost any angle. The holes forming the speaker grilles have been carefully ground down so as not to feel sharp, and even the Lightning port has a little blanket of aluminum wrapped around it. The chamfered aluminum frame wraps around the display with a barely-visible gap, carefully not raised above the display glass so that your fingers glide smoothly off the edges of the tablet should they venture that way. That's probably because the Apple aesthetic has become synonymous with expensiveness in recent years, but it's not all confirmation bias. The iPad Air 2 is, from the moment you set eyes on it, clearly something that costs a significant amount of money.

![]() Lastly, and one that I wouldn’t necessarily recommend unless you are in a pinch is a truck stop. This is a really good option since you can be off and on the highway in minutes. Some of these allow overnight stays and some even provide security. They may have a certain area in the lot they want you to park as well.Īnother option is a highway rest area. If you plan on Wallydocking, make sure to call the store before arriving to make sure they allow overnighting. Most of them allow overnight stays and running in to the store for some supplies or just road trip snacks is super convenient. We’ve stayed at several of them and they’re convenient to stop at night to sleep and get back on the road early in the morning. These are more for overnight stops when you’re on a long haul drive. Now for the less glamorous side of boondocking. Again, it may be a developed campground without hookups or it may be dispersed. It all depends on the park you’re looking at. If you’re looking for solitude, boondock deep in a National Forest and you’ll find it.Ĭheck out their website to find a great spot!Īlso, some state parks offer boondocking opportunities as well. There are so many epic National Forest spots, but they just aren’t as popular as the National Parks. National Forests are kind of like a secret treat when it comes to camping. If you have this opportunity, don’t pass it up! Anytime you can camp inside a National Park is a treat since you don’t have to waste precious time driving in and out each day. Many National Parks have campgrounds in them, but many of them don’t have hookups, so you’re boondocking! National Forests or ParksĪnother great boondocking location is in National Forests or National Parks. That’s what makes boondocking so special. On the other hand, imagine setting up camp at a boondocking site up in the mountains where you get a fantastic sunset. Some of these dispersed locations are rough to get to, so you’ll have to know your limits and your vehicle’s limits when planning a trip there. These campgrounds usually require a fee or permit to stay.ĭispersed camping on BLM land however, does not offer any improvements or amenities and is free a lot of the time. Some of the developed campgrounds have water accessible (some even electric, but were here to dry camp!). We’ve been boondocking off and on since shortly after we hit the road in 2014 and have learned a thing or two along the way. ![]() There really isn’t a “right” way to boondock, but there is definitely a bit of a learning curve to have a good time while doing it as well as a few things to allow you to boondock longer. Some people do it to get away from people and find solitude while others just love nature and want to immerse themselves in it. Sometimes its out in the middle of nowhere, sometimes its in a Walmart parking lot.īoondocking can be a mission to find the most remote spot ever or it can be just overnighting on your way to your next destination. Sometimes boondocking is free camping, sometimes you have to pay a small fee. RV boondocking also gets you out of traditional rv parks, which is great for us because our kids can run wild and not have to really worry about being loud too for neighbors. Whether that’s been up in the remote mountains of Montana or on a beach in Mexico. Some of the very best camping we’ve done has been boondocking. If you are traveling full time in your RV or just planning an epic RV trip we highly recommend you add boondocking to your list of places you will stay. It’s very primitive, but will most likely be an amazing experience. Boondocking is basically dry camping in your RV which means you don’t have access to hookups. ![]() Even though I get weak mobile reception from my home office, it made a noticeable difference anyway. It did this by connecting my home wifi with my iPhone. Not only was its maximum download speed faster than any other VPN that I tested, but it was also faster than my normal, unprotected internet connection. ![]() I will plug my blog here though I wrote a detailed technical post as I was learning about Speedify that might be of further interest.Speedify claims to be fast. It's not, I'm just an impressed customer. Most of my house is just using Starlink directly it's only the desktop computer where I found Speedify is really necessary.Īpologies if this sounds like an ad. A single license is good for 5 devices, which in practice is all I needed. OTOH Speedify does have a built in "share this VPN connection" I imagine they're considering a traveller in a hotel. It seems possible to hack it to work as a whole-house solution but their docs discourage you somewhat from doing that. They do have a Linux version that works well too. Speedify is designed as client software you put it on your desktop computer or mobile device. For now though, it solves a problem very nicely. None of this is a big deal but I'm looking forward to the day Starlink is 100% reliable and I can stop using Speedify. Another drawback is Speedify adds complexity when I have a network problem I have to reason through whether the VPN might be to blame, too. Speedify bypasses the VPN for Netflix and other video services because so many of those block VPNs. I've run into the occasional problem where one of their VPN servers gets treated strangely by an ISP Google was serving me Islamic calendar dates for awhile. They also say their VPN caps out at about 200-300 Mbps which is pretty close to Starlink's top speeds. The biggest is that using the VPN service adds some overhead. It's also pretty cheap I paid $66 for a year (10% off with the coupon DEAL10). It's easy to install, basically automatic. ![]() They've thought through a lot of the problems this kind of networking can have. Speedify's been around for several years now and the product is remarkably sophisticated. And the recovery is fast, even faster with the streaming protocols like Zoom it specially optimizes. If one stream goes down your IP address stays the same, your TCP sessions keep working. By contrast Starlink is actively using both ISP connections to make sure packets get through to the VPN server which is smart enough to combine the two streams into one reliable and faster one. Also WAN failover tends to take a few seconds. But TCP sessions drop and your IP address changes twice, once in the switch over, once in the switch back. WAN failover can help it'll switch your whole network over when Starlink goes down. Speedify is a more robust solution than just configuring a second ISP as a WAN failover on your router. With Zoomify not even that, didn't notice a hitch. With Speedify those problems are greatly smoothed over at worst there'll be a half second of lag or so until everything recovers smoothly using the backup WISP connection. A web page won't load, or my Zoom call will freeze for a few seconds, or my World of Warcraft session will suddenly disconnect. If I just use Starlink on my desktop computer I mostly have a good experience except sometimes I see failures when there's a beta outage or obstruction problem. Now I get Starlink speeds but the reliability of my WISP. I use it to bond Starlink with my old WISP, it works with LTE connections too. It's a VPN that bonds two separate network connections into one more reliable and faster connection. It's the perfect solution for working around Starlink's unreliability during the beta. I've been in the Starlink Beta for a couple of weeks now and wanted to sing the praises of the Speedify VPN service. First of all, you can escape by manoeuvring. A missile that does not reach the target will self-destruct after a certain period of time. When a missile approaches the target, it detonates, generating a directed or undirected stream of shrapnel that strikes the target. it “lights up” easily, is moving in a straight line, and lock-on occurs from the rear hemisphere from the trajectory of the target’s movement) is about 4,000 metres, and the range for a reliable lock-on is about 2,500 metres.Īir-to-air missiles have a proximity fuse that goes off while meeting an aircraft or the ground. Targeting range in near-ideal conditions (the target is a jet fighter in WEP, i.e. In the menu, you can assign one key to prep the guided missile to targeting and another one to fire the missile itself. You then have a limited amount of time to target an enemy and fire before the missile turns back off and you have to start the process over again. The pattern for using guided air-to-air missiles therefore looks like this: you maneuver into an attack position, activate the guided missile, and wait for it to turn on. The guided warhead remains in target-search mode for a limited time, then turns off. When it comes to other nuances related to aiming, locking on, and holding a target, it’s important to remember that a guided missile has a preparatory period of “warming up” its electronics and launching gyro sensors. We’ve reconstructed these nuances in the game by setting different targeting ranges for various missile models. This made it possible to lead while firing a missile, thus improving the starting conditions for it when firing at targets on intercept courses. In other aircraft, the indicator tracked the target, and the aircraft carrying it could manoeuvre within a certain sector relative to it. The target-tracking indicator of some missiles was always strictly focused along the missile’s axis prior to launch, and the missile could only be fired if the pilot kept the target within his sights. Since various kinds of radiation can be detected within the infrared spectrum, missiles can, depending on the features of their design, react to some degree to the sun, heat traps, and active electro-optical countermeasures. ![]() ![]() The homing system of newer missiles are all-aspect, which means that they can also intercept heat given off by the bodies of aircraft and can even be used from the frontal hemisphere. Many WWII-era biplanes and other aircraft, for example, are thus invisible to guided missiles at long range. Early air-to-air missiles could reliably lock onto the thermal signature of jet engines, turboshaft engines, and powerful piston engines. Since the guided warheads of early missiles only react to heat generated by hot gasses from engines, targeting is only effective against the rear hemisphere of aircraft and less effectively other angles. Why are helicopters getting better missiles, you ask? We explained it all in the Developer Diary entry “The Future of Aircraft in War Thunder: Supersonic Jet Aircraft and Air-to-air Missiles.”Īll current air-to-air missiles in update 1.85 have an infrared guidance system with a target-tracking indicator – the missile is aimed using the method of proportional navigation along the shortest trajectory in order to directly intercept the target. Some helicopters in the game will also get air-to-air missiles, but more modern types. Early models of these missiles, including the American AIM-9B Sidewinder, the Soviet P-3C, and the British Firestreak, will become available for particular aircraft. War Thunder update 1.85, which we’ve called “Supersonic”, introduces a new kind of weapon to the game: air-to-air missiles. ![]() Cobalt invisible, but I spotted Iron and one control shaft later I had Cobalt too.
